Visit the picturesque village of Plomari and discover how the famous Greek drink ouzo is made

You depart from port and through a scenic tour of Mytilini town where you will admire the fine architecture of many old mansions, you head south to the picturesque village of Plomari.

The excursion from the town of Mytilene to Plomari follows the shores of the bay for quite a distance, giving everyone the chance to enjoy the simple and pure beauty of the landscape. On the  way  we have  a stop over in Papados (one of the most important villages on Lesvos and the hub of economic activity of Gera,an area with a long tradition in olive-oil  production)

to visit Vrana Old Olive Press. The Olive Press-Museum was one of the first steam-powered factories on Lesvos and in the Aegean. It was built in 1887 by Nikolaos Vranas-grandfather of the great poet Odysseas Elytis-in Papados. In its heyday, the olive press was a major industrial facility .Its external appearance and layout, in complete harmony with the monumental aesthetics   of the time reflect-in all areas-the owner`s vison, to build a lasting enterprise.

We will continue  to Plomari, wich  is  the centre of the cultural and economic activity of the island for many decades, is famous today for its distilleries, which provide Lesvos with perhaps the best ouzo in Greece. The architecture of te town is pretty amazing with giant old mansions, decaying factories and olive presses. Here you will visit the cultural house-center located in the building of an old oil and soap factory and walk in the narrow cobbled streets of the village with the numerous “kafenia”(coffee shops) and local shops.

In the beach “suburb” of Plomari, Agios Isidoros, you will visit the ouzo-distillery of Barbagiannis. The distillery has a museum section and a production section. You will visit both sections of the distillery and experience the methods of “creating” real ouzo, now and then. You will also have the chance to taste the Barbagiannis ouzo, probably the best ouzo in the world.
