2012 Olympic Flame Lighting Ceremony

On May 10, 2012 in Ancient Olympia (Greece) will be held the classical ceremony of Olympic Flame lit which will travel up until London, for 2012 Olympics. The Olympic torch will be transferred, among others, by Kylie Minogue and Will Smith. The opening of the Olympic Games of London is programmed for July 27, 2012 at the Olympic Stadium of the English capital.

The ceremony attracts worldwide media coverage and thousands of tourists and Greeks are coming to watch a humble ritual supported by Greek, renowned actors and athletes. The flame is lit directly by the sun of Olympia, using a reflector.

The flame is considered as the symbol of the Olympic Games. It represents the theft of Zeus holder of the power of “fire” by Promitheas, a mythical character of Greek antiquity representing the everyday man who is fighting for a better life.The revival of this ceremony was re-established for the first time back to 1936, at the Berlin Olympic Games.
