Mitilini, capital of Lesbos Island, is shaped like an amphitheatre, and the highlights you will drive past on the first part of your tour include the Byzantine castle, the Greek theatre, the old North Port and the House of the Old Mayor. Heading west out of town towards the Gulf of Kalloni, enjoy a pleasant drive to Agiasos-one of the most picturesque villages on Lesbos, clinging to the slopes of Mt Olympos. Tile-covered houses with wooden balconies laden with flowers are crowded into narrow lanes. The Church of Panagia (the Virgin Mary), with its majestic bell tower, was built in 1170 as a triple-aisled basilica, and took its present day form in 1815. The building complex around the church houses a Byzantine museum where you can admire the notable displays. You will have some free time to either visit the museum on your own or browse through the charming streets of the village before returning to the ship.
